Will Sowers always knew he wanted to raise cattle for a living. He grew up on his family’s New Mexico ranch and bought his own calves at just 14 years old.

“The first set wasn't very much, it was only 40 head. I ran them on grass and sold that first set in the spring,” Will says. The following year, he started building his own cow herd and continued throughout high school and college.

Upon graduation, Will had the opportunity to buy part of his grandma’s ranch, which was next door to his family’s operation, marking the first time the two operations were run together.

“That would've been December of 2010, and we got into a drought here in 2011 that was absolutely horrible,” Will adds. “The first inch of rain that we had, from basically the fall of 2010, didn't fall until June of 2013.”
