Managing Expenses Across Beef and Dairy Operations

Dublin Holsteins began in the late 1980s with a small herd and has grown into a multi-generational dairy and beef operation near Gratiot, Wisconsin. Today, it’s home to Joe and Kim Wedig and their three sons – Justin, Mitchell and Levi – all working full time on the farm.

For the Wedigs, staying consistent and efficient with feeding is critical. That’s where Performance Beef comes in.

Simple, Accurate, and Synchronized

“We use it for the dairy every day. It makes it easy to stay consistent, especially when we’re switching off mixing feed,” says Levi. “It’s accurate, it’s fast and it keeps us on the same page.”

Initially, the Wedigs weren’t sure they needed a digital feeding system. But after splitting the beef herd into its own business, it became a no-brainer. Performance Beef gave them the ability to manage feed and track expenses across entities with clarity.

“It helps us separate the crop entity from the dairy from the beef,” Levi says. “It’s not just guessing anymore.”

Precision Without Overcomplication

From corn silage to concentrates, the Wedigs rely on Performance Beef to fine-tune their rations, save time during feeding and keep things seamless. “We’re able to really dial in what our nutritionist wants,” Levi says. “That little screen in front of you keeps you accountable.”

The tool’s simplicity has also helped streamline transitions in daily tasks. The Wedig brothers rotate feed responsibilities weekly, and Performance Beef ensures smooth hand-offs.

“It’s simple, accurate and makes a big difference in transparency,” Levi explained. “It’s basically foolproof. Anyone can hop in the loader and know exactly what batch to make.”

Advice for Other Dairies

“You don’t have to use every feature to see the value,” Levi says. “Just being able to track your feed accurately and make decisions based on real numbers is a game changer.”

For Levi and his brothers, the biggest benefit is the software’s simplicity and flexibility. “It’s really easy to get started. You can scale it to fit your operation without being overwhelmed,” he explains. “Even if you’re just looking to track feed and monitor basic costs, that alone can make a noticeable difference in efficiency.”

He also appreciates Performance Beef’s affordability.

“The price point is competitive, especially for what you’re getting,” Levi adds. “It’s a smart entry point for dairies wanting to modernize their feeding program without a huge upfront investment. Whether you’re milking cows or raising beef calves, this system helps you stay accurate, consistent and informed.”

Regardless of the herd, the Wedigs are showing that Performance Beef isn’t just for beef – it’s a powerful tool for dairy producers, too.
