Accuracy and simplicity strengthens teamwork

“It takes a village to raise a nut,” laughs Brandon Pardue, owner of Pardue Farm & Sons. “The same could be said about our operation.”

Brandon’s village includes his mother Brenda, brother Nathan, wife Ashley, and son Caden, all working as a team to support their Ronda, North Carolina, family farm. They background 800 head of cattle and operate eight chicken houses with a total of 170,000 birds, 500 acres of owned row cropland, and 2,000 acres of custom farmland.

The Pardue family feeds cattle in two separate facilities, one at the main ranch and the other in nearby converted chicken barns. They feed with a total mixed ration (TMR) for 80 to 90 days, targeting 2.75 to 3.25 pounds per day of gain before sending the cattle west.

Letting go and starting anew

Brandon explains they used to feed old school, handwriting ingredients for the loader operator, another feed truck driver list, plus all the extra details to fill in the gaps.

“We needed to be simpler and more efficient,” he says. “I hated the headache of writing everything down, then entering it in my computer before it got lost.”

After scouring the internet for options, Brandon came across Performance Beef and was instantly intrigued by its simplicity. A few calls later, he was all in.

“It was so easy to get started,” he says. “We use consistent rations so once I entered the ingredients and set things up, it was straightforward even for adding or decreasing amounts. And, after the feeding period, we didn’t need to examine everything with a fine-tooth comb.”

Daily value keeps coming

“I love that amounts come out of inventory and go to the right group, showing me the cost in real-time,” Brandon says.
He also appreciates the program’s target weight aspect, which is extremely accurate.

“We’ve become much more efficient and sped up our process,” he says. “It’s also made us more money moving away from the old-school pen-and-paper system.”

Sharing the benefits

Brandon’s customers also appreciate knowing exactly what they’re getting and seeing firsthand how their cattle are doing. This transparency clearly demonstrates the benefits to their client’s bottom line.

“In this business, your name goes with you,” Brandon says. “We don’t just want to take all the good and not leave any for the next guy.”

Even the banker appreciates how accurately Brandon dials in inventory projections rather than the estimating.

“When we deliver such precise information, it’s valued and remembered,” he says. “Our lender sees that we have a good grasp of our operation and we’re not simply flying by the seat of our pants.”

Brandon’s favorite Performance Beef feature is the customer service. Company representatives go out of their way to call and ask if he needs help or stop in when they’re in the neighborhood.

“I’d wholeheartedly recommend Performance Beef,” he says. “It shouldn’t be a secret. We’re all trying to provide for our families. I tell people to look into it and make a phone call. You won’t regret it.”
